Charles J. Wyant, Jr.
In his own words...
I am here to make town government work more effectively for the people of the town. Though I left the town at 18 years of age, my values of work ethic, family, community and loyalty were already ingrained in me. I also had a unique view into town government as I watched my father and grandfather run the highway department with honesty, accountability and hard work.
Where I am different from most is that I left to serve this country in two roles. First, I enlisted as a U.S. Marine where I learned discipline and serving the greater good, but mostly I grew up. Coming from a town of 4,000 people and a high school graduating class of 70 to boot camp, Infantry Training and then a combat unit is the ultimate education. You must be organized, mentally strong, selfless, loyal and have a keen understanding of self.
Then I became a Deputy U.S. Marshal. While movies and tv shows are fun to watch, to be e ective I needed to learn more values. Empathy for the victims who could not speak for themselves. Perseverance to the mission even when politics is being played by others above you. Intelligence, both street smarts, and navigating local/state/federal laws.
Personality to communicate with others who didn’t like me for being a cop. Dedication because it’s not easy looking for a silver lining every day. Humility, because the mistakes I made in my life taught me that listening is more important than speaking. I have investigated human tra icking cases and fugitive investigations at the local, state and international level plus Adam Walsh prosecutions on the federal level. I have supervised people, worked with veterans and dignitaries. I created a statewide multi-disciplinary team comprised of law enforcement, victims’ advocates, social services, and health care providers to ensure public safety. In short, I went to New England as a lifelong Yankee fan and networked with a die-hard Red Sox fan base to create a grass roots MDT that made communities safer.
Now I want to concentrate on our community, the needs of senior citizens and farmers. I’ll have o ice hours to be accountable, the town raised me that way.
This is vision statement of 2012 Comprehensive Plan “The town of Clinton desires to maintain its rural character, consisting of natural landscapes, native ecosystems, working farms, small hamlet-scale developments and historic structures, while preserving its scenic quality, and to do so in a manner that continues to promote its small-town atmosphere and quality of life.”
The survey that accompanied it reported 93% of those polled wanted “limited growth without much change” (66%) or “wanted to keep everything the way it was” (27%). People that have moved into town came here for this life. Those that never left made it this way. Town government should listen to the people…
